Art swap: done but not forgotten

As you all know, the art swap was a huge success. Both sides walked away with something great for their studio/home and cartoon bunnies cheered like there was no tomorrow.
I know that I'm WAY happy with my new zombie brush holder. Skeletaldropkick did an excellent job. I'm posting a pic because it's too cool not to share. Plus I haven't had any paint spill on him yet. I'm hoping to keep it that way for as long as possible.

A little while back I met a fellow monster artist on etsy. She makes excellent utilitarian ceramic monster items for your home, studio, or lair. Check out her work: www.skeletaldropkick.etsy.com

She made me a fantastic zombie brush holder for my studio. I created a monster painting themed to fit in with some of her creations called "Ochibos". The new monster is on his way to her and the brush holder will be here soon (but not soon enough:) While we wait very impatiently, here is a pic of this new monster and his story:

Stompchompibos are tiny critters that came about as warm weather tadpoles evolved and moved onto land. They reside near creeks and streams to stay supple. When litter is dropped on the ground, Stompchompobos spring into action. They soar through the air with tiny tentacle nub-arms flapping all the way. Tough feet smash the offending trash into tiny little chompable bits to be eaten and never seen again.

"Stompchompibo" is a 10" x 8" oil painting on canvas board.

Corey the owlbear crunched and slammed his way through the deep dark silent forest. As he crashed into a moondrenched clearing he came to a stop. Hidden there from public view was a glistening pond with one silent resident. When he saw Alex everything stopped for him. Her speckled tentacles floated through the dark pool and she looked up at him with a look he'd never forget and Corey began to sing.

Greetings monster lovers!
So it seems that it has been WAY too long since I've posted here. I hope you're still out there aboard the iiiiiiinnnterrnet!
Tonight I'm taking a new approach that I've been working on for my facebook artist's page. I have a commissioned monsterized pet portrait under way. I'm posting the step-by-step on facebook and thought the 365 Monsters readers would enjoy seeing it too.

With all the power of 365 of his closest friends and most horrid enemies, Pumpkin Stumps jumped high into the air with an explosive blast. A celebration like no other was about to begin.

The only way I could think to end a monster art project was to draw a new monster.
If you've seen every post since monster # 1 posted a year ago tonight or this is the first post you've ever set your monster-loving eyes on, I want to say thank you. Monsters have always been a part of my art and this project let me push them to the forefront for a while.
It's been fun, scary, confusing, difficult, and so much more along the way. In the end I achieved my original goal of keeping busy, exercising my creativity, and creating at least one new piece of artwork per day.
You've helped me to do that and also played a large part of the project and I couldn't have done it without you. I can't thank my readers/viewers enough (I love the pictures best of course).
This isn't the end. New monsters and posts will appear on here from time to time. I would very much like to publish this project as a book so look for that and please send word if you can help or have interest. It would be great to show the remaining collection as an exhibit as well.
In the Spring or Summer of 2010 I'll be starting my next blog project called "52 Farms". This new project will feature fewer pieces of artwork than 365 Monsters at one per week but the work will be more ambitious and larger. 52 different working farms within reasonable distance of my studio (mostly Montgomery & Bucks counties in PA) will be featured. Their info will be made available and a painting or drawing will be completed and posted.
I know this is a bit different than all of the monstery fun we had this year. I hope you'll come along for another ride.

Once these sneakers are on and the laces are tied, shoe monsters spring to life. They quickly knot the laces to keep themselves attached. When there's no longer any chance of escape, the shoe monsters begin the worst case scenario for the wearer. they go hunting for meat.

Gamgam Rizzleshmidt is one of those inspirational creatures that humans rarely hear about. He delights in the downfall of societies, traversing alternate realities to annihilate interdimensional targets, dancing on the souls of unscrupulous food servers, and he also crafts his own delicious batches of homebrew in his garage.

Sure, Teddy can't actually get hurt and he'll never be sick, but all of his get-up and go is all gone-out and went. When he was surprised in his craggy 'ol cave he just shrugged it off and waved at us once as he grumbled. It's just sad to see.

It was a slap-happy wonderful kinda day for Barry. Slap-happy-tastic right up until he came across those cherries. Due to an incident in the mid 80's with Ms. Pacman herself, cherries (and other random fruits seen floating by) set Barry off and put him on edge in the worst way.

His mother named him Virgil after his grandaddy. Now everyone calls him Verny-Shinbones for so many obvious reasons. Verny is misunderstood because of his people-eating tendencies and is generally under-appreciated overall. he's really quite friendly though...when he isn't hungry.

Poor John used to be such a happy-go-lucky monster guy. he spent most of his time fixing up his happy home and playing Parcheesi...didn't even enjoy smashing things. Today he woke up and a constant flow of melty warm cheese was oozing from his finger tips. One last look at his house (and trail of gooey disaster) was all he could spare. John didn't want to risk being smothered in cheese sauce.

Arthur the giant leaping fishman trudged onto the damp shoreline. He scooped up two unsuspecting rag-people. The smell alone was enough to have them incapacitated instantly.
now that he's had his snack, Arthur can go back to bed a happy camper. It isn't easy hanging out above sea level when you're a giant leaping fishman.

Lepton Fred and Herman P. Marvin began life as best buddies. They spent every waking moment romping, stomping, and tearing it up. Sometime in the late 80's Herman got into scrapbooking hardcore. Lepton Fred felt he had lost his friend and reacted by smashing buildings all over town. The onset of the new millennium and a booming housing market found these two pals back together again. here we see them partying down like it's 1999.

This yellow jerk doesn't help anybody. he isn't in it to commit crimes or get large sums of money. He's just mean and terrible and very fast with his own made-up style of karate.

Why hasn't someone fed themselves to Walter? he hasn't eaten anybody in hours and he's getting madder by the minute. Everybody on the block loves zombie cat. He keeps all of the mice and squirrels out of the yards. he makes sure that no one is out after dark causing mischief. Zombie cat doesn't need to be fed. Knowing he's around helps to make every night feel like Halloween. Just make sure you don't get bit by zombie cat or you won't be coming to another block party.

Although they seem quite morbid and dangerous to be around, the Skull Sucker is quite safe...I assure you. They're actually scavengers, not predators as many people believe. On top of that, they're also great snugglers (if you can get past the smell).

A battle of epic proportions has waged on for centuries. It goes unnoticed because The Hamfisted Destroyer and Puppy master have been scrapping it up outside the normal borders of our society. It was widely thought that Duck-billed Woollybuster was long extinct. After a horrible mining incident in Southern Utah, theories were reversed. The rescue team went in and was never heard from again. All that was found were flashlights, bloody helmets, and fresh Woollybuster hairs.

Lentopolis stretched out from the tips of his 20 fingers to the frayed ends of his 2 tails. Being a lion-like relative of the Centaur puts him in a good spot in the animal kingdom. If he wanted, Lentopolis could be king of the jungle in a heartbeat. Though most days he'd rather be napping and eating everlasting gobstoppers.

Cuddly cousins of iguanas bred with koalas and formed a new species. Purple Guanolas still love to eat eucalyptus leaves and seem to enjoy many other varieties too. They have also developed a fondness for swimming and have taken to swimming across large bodies of water to get to new food sources. At last count they have been breeding in record numbers and are projected to overtake the human population of the southern hemisphere by 2016.

Glen is the quiet type...never too close to people. It's not that he isn't friendly or likeable (quite the opposite).
You might guess it's because of his third eye, fangs, or bright red skin tone. Truthfully, people steer clear of Glen because of the high voltage electricity that arcs from the tips of his fingers.

Maxine felt at home with the snakes. She let them roll and hang all over her and it was good. Soon Maxine left the world of people behind her and only spent time amidst the serpents. It wasn't long until she literally became one with them and they grew together as one slithering creature.

Be very quiet. The Cave Krunk's ears are very sensitive. Although he probably can't see us from this distance, if he hears us we'll probably get mauled. The Cave Krunk is known for savage attacks using the gorilla-like clawed arms or repeated pouncing with his dexterous talony feet. His only known weakness is Nutella.

The human body is a wonderland of fun and festivities to a germ bug. Here we have a specimen carefully removed from the system for study. His nervousness is apparent from the large amounts of foam expelled.
If left on their own, each bug would attack the body from the inside out. Let's get them out of there!

The Ostrictor is a hairless cousin of the standard ostrich. With a long snake-like neck and very strong legs, this creature is capable of great feats including jumping over huge obstacles and crushing enemies like a constrictor. Although quite capable of defending itself, Ostrictors are shy and tend to stray away from conflict.

A sad and morbidly colorless beast grew to enormous proportions by eating the color out of this world. It started with bits of hues here and there, grew to whole sections of the color wheel gone in a flash, and moved on to entire rainbows in a slurp. Now things have come to a crashing halt as too much color got inhaled way too fast and a hideous prism of color is flowing back into the world in one fluid motion.

The rarely seen but sometimes smelled Himalayan Stink Fox is one maliciously stinky little critter. He slinks along the edge of dumps, marshes, and cheap buffets where existing odors mask his presence. be careful not to get caught in his repulsive blast!

Let this be a lesson to you...after letting his guard down, an industrious Grabber stabbed and paralyzed this poor person with his stinger. Now the last thing he'll see out of that tasty delicious eyeball is teeth spreading wide and grabbing away. I know I'll continue to wear my protective goggles when I go to bed at night (for just such an occasion).

As I heard it, a carny and an evil ringmaster got into a scrap one day (back in the old days when circus and carny folk had true honor). They fought and struggled for a very long time. In the end the ringmaster called in the clowns and won. With his last breath, the carny cursed the ringmaster...he would walk the earth as all the pieces of a circus for the rest of his unnatural days.

Spotted Longheads stand at around 14 inches tall. They spend their days bounding through the tulip fields of the Netherlands looking for tasty bugs to eat and enjoying the silly humans all day long. Chubby nomads like this make their way through the toxic combustible post-apocalyptic static that surrounds their home.
It is the year 6742 and they have no idea that they were once human beings. Our progeny seem to have paid the price for our environmental sins. Strangely though, they seem to thrive in a poisonous cloud of doom and love every minute of it. Goggles are very precious.

When the hot summer sun rises to a mere 50 feet over the ground in August, my body is drawn to the air conditioning like a moth to flame. Having done this for too too long, the yard is reaching (what we in the biz like to call) meadow status.
